The Batavia City Council is continuing to explore the removal of the aging Batavia Dam on the Fox River. The council has now earmarked $200,000 to perform a feasibility study in 2025, which appears to be the next phase in this project.
The latest updates:
The proposed dam removal aligns with recommendations from the Army Corps of Engineers, which has laid out safety concerns regarding the dam’s deterioration.
The preferred approach from the River Corridor Master Plan involves replacing the dam with a series of rock weirs to maintain water levels in Depot Pond (which would otherwise turn into a mudflat).
With funding sources and timelines yet to be determined, the feasibility study would clarify costs and potential economic impacts.
The project could include recreational enhancements pending further discussion and community input.
The upcoming feasibility study will play a crucial role in shaping the final plans, balancing environmental considerations with community needs.
