The Batavia City Council is continuing to explore the removal of the aging Batavia Dam on the Fox River. The council has now earmarked $200,000 to perform a feasibility study in 2025, which appears to be the next phase in this project.

The latest updates:

  • The proposed dam removal aligns with recommendations from the Army Corps of Engineers, which has laid out safety concerns regarding the dam’s deterioration.

  • The preferred approach from the River Corridor Master Plan involves replacing the dam with a series of rock weirs to maintain water levels in Depot Pond (which would otherwise turn into a mudflat).

  • With funding sources and timelines yet to be determined, the feasibility study would clarify costs and potential economic impacts.

  • The project could include recreational enhancements pending further discussion and community input.

The upcoming feasibility study will play a crucial role in shaping the final plans, balancing environmental considerations with community needs.
