The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has found Flint Group in violation of state law and permits following the March chemical spill that resulted in an alarming amount of foam found in Batavia’s Mahoney Creek.

The global print materials manufacturer accidentally released the firefighting foam — which contains PFAS chemicals — into the creek due to a malfunctioning system.

Key points to know:

  • Flint Group faces six alleged violations, including discharge of contaminants and failure to maintain stormwater controls.

  • The company has until August 24 to respond to the EPA's letter outlining the violations.

  • While initial concerns were raised about public health, the Illinois Department of Public Health later determined the spill was unlikely to harm residents.

  • Cleanup efforts in Mahoney Creek have been completed, and testing of nearby private wells is ongoing.

  • Batavia city officials plan to seek reimbursement from Flint Group for costs associated with the spill.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation as Flint Group's response deadline approaches.
