Rob Russell, the current coroner, argues that the position is primarily a law enforcement role and therefore shouldn’t require a medical background (he is a former deputy sheriff).
Challenger Monica Silva, a chiropractic physician, contends that medical expertise is essential for the coroner's duties, particularly in determining causes of death.
Both candidates have plans to improve the office's operations, with Russell focusing on establishing a regional forensic laboratory and Silva proposing real-time reporting of drug-related deaths.
