Kane County officials are reviewing a proposed $2M increase in its property tax levy to help fund essential services and offset inflation. This would be the first significant hike since 2013.

  • Why the increase? Board members advocating for the hike argue that the additional revenue is necessary to maintain county services amid rising costs.

  • Tax cap: The proposed 3.4% increase increase is the maximum amount state law would allow for.

  • Opposition concerns: Some board members worry the tax hike could impact the success of an upcoming sales tax referendum, set for April, which would add 0.75% to sales tax rates to address ongoing budget deficits.

  • Budget challenges: Kane County has been using reserve funds since 2023 to cover budget shortfalls. Without new revenue, officials say reserve funds could be depleted within a few years.

The Kane County Board will make a final decision on the levy increase at their November 12 meeting.
