Pertussis, or whooping cough, has seen a significant resurgence in Kane County, with 92 cases reported so far in 2024.

This marks a sharp increase from prior years and reflects a broader national trend of rising cases for this highly contagious respiratory disease.

Key points:

  • What is Pertussis? Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory illness that may begin like a common cold, but unlike a cold, the coughing can last for weeks or months. Treating whooping cough early with antibiotics may make the infection less serious.

  • Rising numbers: Kane County saw between zero and 16 cases from 2021 to 2023, while the 2024 total has surged close to levels last seen in 2012.

  • Importance of vaccination: Vaccines are vital in reducing severe cases, although immunity can diminish over time. Pregnant women are encouraged to get vaccinated to protect newborns.

  • Early detection: Quick testing and antibiotic treatment are critical for containing outbreaks and preventing complications, especially in high-risk groups.
