Geneva city officials and property owners of the historic blacksmith shop along the river continue to clash over the structure’s fate.

The latest updates:

  • The Shodeen Family Foundation (which owns the property) has been cited for violating city maintenance codes regarding the building's condition.

  • A hearing officer mandated that the owners weatherproof the limestone structure by mid-October.

  • The city’s attorney says that the required weatherproofing could be as simple as covering the building with a tarp to satisfy the city's compliance code.

The building, dating back to the 1830s, holds landmark status, which complicates the continued attempts to redevelop the site.

The next adjudication hearing will be held on October 17 at Batavia City Hall.
