Smarty Pants Cafe of Batavia announced the launch of a “Counter Language” program designed to create a vibrant and engaging cafe environment for language learning and cultural exchange.
What is Counter Language?
The “Counter Language” program transforms Smarty Pants Cafe into a hub of linguistic diversity. Proficient speakers of foreign languages will stand behind the counter and take orders in their respective languages.
This interactive experience allows customers, whether novices or proficient speakers, to practice and enhance their language skills in a real-world setting.
How to volunteer
The cafe welcomes volunteers proficient in any foreign language to participate. Interested individuals can reach out to Smarty Pants Cafe via the Facebook group “Counter Language” or sign up at the cafe.
Anyone interested should provide the following details:
Language(s) spoken
Proficiency level
Preferred day(s) and time(s) for volunteering
Volunteers will have the opportunity to engage with the community, share their language skills and help create an immersive learning experience.
Smarty Pants Cafe will announce the language, day, and time for these events through in-cafe message boards, social media and email newsletters.
“This idea had been in the works even before I opened Smarty Pants Cafe, and the community's enthusiasm has been overwhelming,” said Mike Kandah, owner of Smarty Pants Cafe. “We are thrilled to see such a positive response and can't wait to bring this vision to life."
